SMME BOOSTED THROUGH SUPPLIER DEVELOPMENT

July 2025.

A Kenhardt-based small business is playing a key role in strengthening local economic resilience by helping as many as 20 community enterprises become business-compliant and ready to seize new opportunities.

Through its commitment to inclusive local development, Aries Solar Power is ensuring that the economic benefits of the solar plant directly support the Kenhardt community. One of the ways this is being achieved is through its Supplier Development Programme, currently benefiting Khawuleza Projects and Consulting—a locally owned consultancy—that assists other small businesses, NGOs, and informal traders in meeting the compliance requirements needed to grow and thrive.

By offering essential services such as assistance with COIDA registration, tax clearance certificates, safety file updates, and company registrations, Khawuleza Projects has made it easier for entrepreneurs to access support without travelling long distances to Upington.

“Being part of this programme has been amazing,” said Christiaan George, owner of Khawuleza Projects. “The support has helped my consultancy operate more efficiently and serve local businesses better. It’s encouraging to know we’re able to help fellow Kenhardt entrepreneurs’ access real opportunities.”

Having recognised the positive impact that Khawuleza Projects was already making in the community, Aries Solar Power decided to deepen its support by upgrading the consultancy’s office premises in the heart of Kenhardt. This second phase of support has strengthened the company’s ability to deliver services more efficiently, while also creating a dedicated, fully equipped walk-in centre for local businesses needing compliance assistance – in addition to everyday business support.

“The upgraded office is a first for this community,” explained Harrisinah Theka, Economic Development Manager at Aries Solar Power. “Now that there is an equipped office that renders services in town, local businesses and NGOs can respond more quickly to opportunities – including from other Independent Power Producers and organisations like Transnet. With the right compliance documents in place, they stand a better chance of securing contracts or employment.”

This initiative forms part of Aries Solar Power’s broader commitment to local enterprise development, supporting local growth potential and building a stronger, more self-sufficient community in Kenhardt.
